The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is offering tips for parents readying their child for a COVID vaccination.
Children ages 5-11 are now eligible for the Pfizer version of the vaccine. The CDC said the experience of receiving the vaccine will be similar to other shots, but there are some things parents should know.
COVID vaccine recommendations from CDC:
- Talk to your child before vaccination about what to expect.
- Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have.
- To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during vaccination and for 15 minutes after the vaccine is given.
- After your child’s COVID-19 vaccination, you will be asked to stay for 15–30 minutes so your child can be observed in case they have a severe allergic reaction and need immediate treatment.
And an important thing to avoid, according to the CDC:
- It is not recommended you give pain relievers before vaccination to try to prevent side effects.
Here’s the reason from the agency:
“It is not recommended you take over-the-counter medicine – such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or acetaminophen – before vaccination for the purpose of trying to prevent vaccine-related side effects. It is not known how these medications might affect how well the vaccine works. However, if you take these medications regularly for other reasons, you should keep taking them before you get vaccinated. It is also not recommended to take antihistamines before getting a COVID-19 vaccine to try to prevent allergic reactions.”
Side effects
Side effects for children are similar to those experienced by adults. They include pain, redness and swelling in the arm where the child got the shot and tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever and nausea throughout the rest of their body.
Side effects could impact a child’s ability to do daily activities but typically go away in a few days.
