Pa. registers spike of nearly 1,000 new COVID-19 cases - PennLive

Pennsylvania reported 986 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, more than six times the daily average of early July.

The number hospitalized with COVID-19 also continued a sharp upturn, with 430 people hospitalized, up from about 260 at the beginning of last week. The number in intensive care rose to 97, up from 86 on Monday.

COVID-19 cases are surging in most of the country, with the surge blamed on proliferation of the delta variant, which is several times more contagious than earlier strains, and decreased restrictions on things like crowd size and mask wearing. A few cities around the country have restored mask-wearing requirements in certain situations.

Still, Gov. Tom Wolf this week said he isn’t considering a return to tighter restrictions, and Pennsylvania will continue to rely on vaccination to control COVID-19, according to Fox43.

Pennsylvania reported four new COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, raising its toll to 27,831.

The state said that as of early Tuesday just short of 63% of Pennsylvanians 18 or older are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
