Public Health monitoring Delta variant, urges community to get vaccinated

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Health and Human Services’ Public Health is monitoring the impact of the new Delta variant and urging all residents to get vaccinated in order to protect from the spread of COVID-19.

As vaccination rates decline, new cases of COVID-19 are increasing, and notably increasing among unvaccinated residents. With more activity and reopening of businesses for the busy summer season, the risk of COVID-19 infections also has increased and is especially concerning with potential impacts of the new Delta variant.

“Across the nation, fifty percent of new cases are being attributed to the new Delta variant, and we are very concerned and want to be sure you are protected,” said Health and Human Services Director Donna Fayko. “This new variant is much more transmissible. It brings more severe illness. Those who are vaccinated are not getting it at the same rate as those who are not vaccinated. And in fact, in North Carolina ninety-nine percent of the new cases are occurring in people who are unvaccinated. We are seeing a rise in breakouts in counties that have low vaccination rates, so I am here to encourage you to consider being vaccinated to protect you and your loved ones.”

COVID-19 Data in New Hanover County:

• As of July 15, there have been 19,901 total cases of COVID-19 in New Hanover County, including 77 new cases over the last week.
• Of the total number of cases, 19,574 have recovered and 150 cases are presumed to still be active. Sadly, 177 people have died from the virus.
• In New Hanover County, approximately 120,913 residents (about 52 percent) have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and approximately 114,786 residents (about 49 percent) are fully vaccinated and protected from COVID-19.
• In the state’s County Alert System, New Hanover County remains in the Light Yellow tier, signifying moderate community spread of COVID-19. The county’s current metrics in the system update are as follows:
  • 14-day case rate per 100,000 people: 38.40
  • 14-day percent positivity: 1.5%
  • Hospital impact: Slight
