Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said lockdowns are unlikely despite the rise in COVID-19 cases, but things are going to get worse with the Delta variant’s spread.
The nation’s top infectious disease expert stressed that this is an “outbreak of the unvaccinated,” and that this group is far more vulnerable to catching COVID-19 and its variants of concern than those who are vaccinated.
“I don’t think we’re going to see lockdowns,” Fauci said on ABC’s This Week on Sunday. “I think we have enough of the percentage of people in the country — not enough to crush the outbreak — but I believe enough to not allow us to get into the situation we were in last winter.”
However, Fauci added that just because lockdowns were unlikely, it does not mean that the U.S. is out of the woods with the Delta variant just yet.
“Things are going to get worse” as the Delta strain spreads, Fauci said. “We’re seeing the cases go up, which is the reason why we keep saying over and over again, the solution to this is get vaccinated and this would not be happening.”
Fauci also said the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines on masking indoors have much more to do with disease “transmission” to vulnerable populations than protecting healthy, vaccinated people from rare and mild breakthrough infections.
Some experts even recommend upgrading to N95 masks to help protect against the Delta variant.
