Ohio Department of Health reports 2,317 Covid cases. … Nashville-based conservative radio talk-show host Phil Valentine, who had questioned the severity of coronavirus and the necessity for Covid vaccines, dies. He was 61.
Aug. 22
Cleveland Public Library announces it will reinstate a requirement for visitors to wear masks inside. … CNN, citing Centers for Disease Control statistics, says 51.5% - or about 170 million people in the United States – are fully vaccinated, and 60.7% have received at least one dose.
Aug. 23
A school district in southern Ohio closes for the rest of the week after a rash of student absences attributed to Covid and other illnesses. About 14.5% of the students in Fairfield Local Schools, in Highland County, reported being sick this morning. … The FDA grants full approval to the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for people 16 and older. The move is seen as hopeful in the campaign to persuade hesitant people to get the shot. … The U.S. military will require all service members to be vaccinated. … Body builder, wrestler, actor and promoter Brick Bronsky (real name: Jeff Beltzner) dies of Covid. He was 57.
Aug. 24
Ohio’s Covid case rate is rocketing sharply, hitting a six-month high of 4,117 cases. … Ohio State University announces it is requiring every student, faculty member and employee to be fully vaccinated against coronavirus by mid-November.
Aug. 25
The state records 4,600 cases, topping 4,000 for the second consecutive day. … Fans attending Ohio State University football home games will not need to be vaccinated against coronavirus, even though the school has a vaccine mandate for students and staff. But spectators at the stadium will have to follow general campus requirements that face masks be worn indoors.
Aug. 26
Ohio records 5,395 new cases. The last time the case count topped 5,000 was on Jan. 28. The state has had 1,197,873 cases. … The Akron Marathon Race Series announces its marquee event, the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay on Saturday, Sept. 25, will require runners and volunteers to be fully vaccinated or have a negative Covid test result 72 hours before the race. … MetroHealth System will require employees, including contractors and volunteers, to receive Covid vaccinations. Deadline is Saturday, Oct. 30. … Japan suspends use of about 1.63 million Moderna vaccine doses after contamination is found in unused vials, raising concern of a supply shortage as the country tries to increase vaccinations amid a Covid surge.
Aug. 27
Reuters reports that Thailand will lift most coronavirus restrictions on retail and dining from next month and permit gatherings of up to 25 people in Bangkok and other high-risk areas.

“Covid is burning through our population here in Kentucky.” – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. It was announced that beginning Wednesday, Sept. 1, National Guard teams would be deployed to hospitals in the state dealing with surging cases and staffing shortages.
