Fauci: GOP's refusal to get vaccinated hurts efforts to lift restrictions - New York Post

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday said Republicans who want to lift COVID-19 restrictions but don’t want to get vaccinated don’t “make any sense.”

“It’s almost paradoxical that on the one hand, they want to be relieved of the restrictions, but on the other hand, they don’t want to get vaccinated. It just almost doesn’t make any sense,” Fauci said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said he was frustrated by a poll that showed 43 percent of GOP voters still don’t want to get the shot.

“It is quite frustrating because the fact that one may not want to get vaccinated, in this case of a disturbingly large proportion of Republicans, only actually works against where they want to be,” he said.

Fauci noted that many Republicans seem “very concerned” about public health restrictions.

“We share that concern but the way you get rid of those restrictions is to get as many people vaccinated as quickly and as expeditiously as possible because when that happens… you’re going to see the level of virus in the community go down and down and down to the point where you would not have to have those public health restrictions,” he said.

The comments come after Fauci and GOP Rep. Jim Jordan got into several heated exchanges over reopenings during Congressional testimony last week.
