Pfizer, AstraZenenca vaccines: What does one dose do for you? - Deseret News

New research suggests one dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or one dose of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine can protect you for at least 10 weeks.

  • COVID-19 infections with symptoms fell by 74% among those who had received the first vaccine dose, according to the study, which surveyed about 373,402 people in the United Kingdom from December 2020 to April 2021, BBC News reports.
  • The vaccine’s effectiveness lasted for at least 10 weeks.

Details of the studies

The two studies — which come from Oxford University — found there was a 65% reduction in COVID-19 cases overall after the people in the study got one dose of the vaccine, according to CNBC.

  • The researchers said the protection likely lasts for close to 10 weeks.
  • Both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines require two doses for full vaccinations.
  • The researchers found symptomatic infection fell by 74% within three weeks of a single dose. Asymptomatic cases dropped by 57%, according to CNBC.
  • The second dose led to a 70% drop in infection rate, a 90% drop in infections with symptoms and 49% drop in asymptomatic cases, CNBC reports.

What it means

Sarah Walker, a professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at Oxford and leader of the survey, told Business Insider that this lends support to the idea that everyone should get at least one dose. “But people must get their second dose,” she said.
