Breakthrough COVID cases, hospitalizations, deaths remain low, Murphy says - NJ.com

Breakthrough COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue to remain relatively low, Gov. Phil Murphy said at his Monday coronavirus briefing.

He said less than one-half of 1% of the 5.4 million people in New Jersey who were fully vaccinated have tested positive for the coronavirus.

And of the actual positive PCR and antigen tests that have been performed between Jan. 19 – the day when the earliest vaccinated people reached full vaccination – and Sept. 13, breakthrough infections made up only 5.4% of the 485,388 total.

“These overall totals are the best measure of the power of the vaccines, as they encompass all individuals over time – this is the complete apples-to-apples data,” Murphy said.

“Yes, we’ve seen an increase in positive tests among the fully vaccinated as the Delta variant has marched across the state, but they remain a distinct minority of cases and there is nothing in the data that suggests a failing among the vaccines,” he said.

When it comes to hospitalizations, Murphy said, a total of 537 fully vaccinated individuals have been admitted because of COVID, or 0.01% of all fully vaccinated people. That’s out of a total of more than 38,000 total hospitalizations in the state during the pandemic, he said.

Murphy said unvaccinated people have made up 96% of COVID deaths in the state. Between Jan. 19 and Sept. 13, New Jersey lost nearly 5,900 people because of COVID, Murphy said. Of those, 126 were fully vaccinated, or 0.02% of the total of fully vaccinated people, he said.

Breakthrough COVID cases, hospitalizations, deaths remain low, Murphy said.

Most cases, hospitalizations and deaths are among unvaccinated people, Gov. Phil Murphy said.

In the most recent week available, from Sept. 7 through Sept. 12, there were 32 COVID-related hospitalizations and two deaths, Murphy said.

“Getting vaccinated makes you far less likely to contract the coronavirus and, even if you do, you are far less likely to develop a case of COVID that would land you in the hospital or the morgue,” he said.
